Juniper announces 100G router interface

Tools

Juniper Networks has announced a 100-Gbps Ethernet router interface that it expects to have in customer trials later this year, a development that may fit well with Verizon Communications' timeline for commercially deploying 100G possibly sometime next year. 100G router interfaces have been seen as a major goal for the 100G vendor community, and while Cisco Systems has demonstrated the capability, Juniper's plan for trials suggests a possible timing edge, according to Light Reading. Juniper's interface capability is expected to target interface needs within central offices, data centers or other short-distance realms.

The Juniper announcement is the latest development in a 100G market that has been rife with various trials, vendor commitments and positioning since last year. It also comes just days after Juniper and Nokia Siemens Networks announced they are forming a joint venture to pursue the growing carrier Ethernet market.
