Johnson said that he would retire from the company once a replacement was found. Although he is stepping down from the CEO role, he is retaining his seat on the company's board of directors.

Kheradpir comes to Juniper Networks from Barclays, where he served as the chief operations and technology officer since 2011. Prior to Barclays he spent a decade at Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) where he was executive vice president and chief information and technology officer.

As one of the original members of Verizon's management team when it was created after the company's predecessor Bell Atlantic purchased GTE, Kheradpir he helped lead the ILEC's transition from a regional telephone company to global service provider.

Two of this most notable efforts at Verizon were to spearhead the company's efforts in IP multimedia and developing its FiOS fiber to the home service.

Kheradpir comes to Juniper at a transitional time. Despite reporting the Q3 revenue rose 6 percent to $1.3 billion, the vendor announced it would cut 3 percent of its workforce as the emergence of software-based systems threatens its dominant position in the edge and core routing markets.
