Lantiq snaps up Metalink's home network assets

Lantiq has put another arrow in its home networking quiver by brokering a deal to acquire Israel-based Metalink's WLAN Intellectual Property and assets.

Expected to be closed in January, Lantiq paid up to $16.9 million for Metalink's assets, a figure that includes an $8.9 million initial payment and an $8 million additional payment based on future performance.

Among the assets that Lantiq is acquiring is Metalink's 802.11 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology that the company claims can effectively deliver unobstructed high definition video in a home network.

With the Metalink acquisition, Lantiq has also developed a technical competence center in Yakum, Israel that will house a team of 50 engineers to drive home networking and wireless LAN innovations.

It's been a busy year since Lantiq was formed when Infineon sold its wireline business to Golden Gate Capital last July. Not long after it became a standalone company when Infineon officially closed the deal with Golden Gate Capital, Lantiq began its acquisition journey by buying up Bedford, Mass.-based Aware's home networking, DSL related assets and intellectual property (IP).
