Level 3 brings fiber network to Tulane University

Level 3 Communications (NYSE: LVLT) on Monday won a contract to provide its network services to Tulane University in New Orleans.

Under the terms of the agreement, the service provider will deliver Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) and Ethernet Private Line (EPL) services to the university.

Other than saying they have signed a multi-year agreement, neither Level 3 nor Tulane revealed the specific terms of the deal.

Charlie McMahon, chief technology officer for Tulane University, said, "These network services safeguard Tulane against losing connectivity to communications that are critical to the university's core mission."

This is certainly another win for Level 3 as it tries to gain the attention of more end-user vertical segments like education for Core Network Services. In Q3 2012, Core Network Services revenues rose 1.1 percent sequentially over Q2 2012, to $1.39 billion.

While high speed fiber-based network connectivity is certainly a big part of what Level 3 provides Tulane and a host of other universities in the United States, the other key element lies in the provider's ability to provide necessary network redundancy, Continuity of Operations (COOP) and Disaster Recovery (DR) services.

Leveraging the same care the company takes for its federal government customers, the COOP/DR thesis makes sense here given the fact that Tulane is located in New Orleans, a city that's seen its share of natural disasters in recent years, including Hurricane Katrina.
