Level 3 expands CDN footprint in EMEA, Latin America, Asia

Level 3 Communications (NYSE: LVLT) is responding to the need for higher-quality content delivery by expanding its CDN footprint with new points of presence (PoPs) in five regions, including Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Set to be completed by the end of this year, the service provider said that this initiative is focused on regions where there is high broadband growth and offer a new market opportunity for Level 3 and local and global businesses.

"With expansions in EMEA, Asia and LATAM, we are building a network for the future of Internet consumption and the massive adoption of mobile platforms," said Mark Taylor, vice president of media and IP services at Level 3, in a release.

Latin America, in particular, has been a key target for Level 3's CDN services, which it began offering in the region last August.

CDN overall is a major growth segment for the service provider. In Q3 2013, it reported that CDN revenue grew 37 percent in the third quarter of 2013 compared to the same quarter in 2012.
