Level 3 extends Vyvx video services to South Africa

Level 3 Communications (NYSE: LVLT) sees South Africa as the next growth area for its Vyvx broadcast unit, so it has established a new Point of Presence (PoP) located in Johannesburg.

Out of this new PoP, Level 3 will enable companies in South Africa to more rapidly transmit live sports, breaking news and other video content to the international community.

Likewise, companies in North America, Western Europe and Latin America will be able to use the PoP to deliver their broadcast content more readily to South Africa.

The competitive provider's instincts seem to be on the right track, as it has already enabled one of Level 3′s South African broadcast customers, Telemedia, to provide its local broadcast network customers with on-net access to a global network footprint.

While South Africa has traditionally not had many options for bandwidth, that trend is in changing due to the installation of a number of new submarine cable systems that are in the process of being built on both the East (SEACOM, EASSy) and West Coast (WACS, GLO-1, ACE, and Main One) coasts of the country. SEACOM, for example, connects South Africa and Eastern Africa with Europe and Southern Asia.
