Level 3, Internet2, others team on 100G testbed

Tools

Level 3 Communications, the Internet2 and ESNet research networks, Juniper Networks, Infinera and other outfits are planning to build 100 Gbps Ethernet that will help test high-bandwidth applications and fine-tune their 100G network management skills, as that lofty bandwidth threshold network becomes more common.

The Internet2 network was among the first to be upgraded to 100 Gbps late last year by Level 3, and it will serve as the foundation for the testbed. However, other details on location and timing are not yet known. The testbed will look to push the boundaries of previous tests by using Ethernet interfaces. The announcement comes at an interesting time, given that industry trade groups the Ethernet Alliance and the 100G Alliance announced just a few days ago that they would merge.
