LG-Nortel to acquire WDM-PON developer

Tools

The timing of mass-market WDM-PON deployment remains uncertain, but that did not stop LG-Nortel, a joint venture of Nortel Networks and South Korea's LG, from agreeing to acquire Novera Optics, a maker of wavelnegth division multiplexing-passive optical network gear. LG-Nortel will pay an initial $16 million, plus $10 million if the business meets 18-month goals.

Novera Optics, which is based in Santa Clara, Calif., but also has a major presence in South Korea, found early success with Korea Telecom and the technology has been a hot topic at NXTcomm and other industry conferences. While other carriers around the world have been looking at WDM-PON closely as the next-generation architectural solution for their broadband networks, not many have committed to broad deployments yet. ADC Telecommunications has provided a primary sales channel for Novera Optics in the U.S.
