Lightower enhances fiber reach into downtown Philly

Lightower Fiber Networks continues to make progress with its network expansion effort, announcing that it extended its fiber footprint throughout downtown Philadelphia.

By putting these additional network facilities in place, the service provider said it will be able to deliver its suite of networking services to businesses throughout downtown, including the area surrounding Broad Street, Market Street, JFK Boulevard and Chestnut Avenue. Existing and new customers in Philadelphia will have access to all of Lightower's network and its service locations.

Complementing the fiber reach, the service provider also offers customers over 16,000 square feet of colocation space at the 401 N. Broad data center facility. Enterprise customers that reside at this facility will be able to get diverse connectivity into the facility as well as within the facility, enabling enterprise customers to implement cloud solutions, disaster recovery and business continuity (DRBC) strategies and other mission-critical applications.

Expanding its fiber network inside downtown Philadelphia makes sense for Lightower as it can more effectively target the city's growing base of large businesses, universities and hospitals. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has been looking to attract more startup businesses and growing technologies to the city.

"Adding to our network presence in downtown Philadelphia is an important step for Lightower as we continue to aggressively expand in existing markets and into new markets," commented Rob Shanahan, CEO of Lightower, in a release. "Philadelphia is home to so many of the industries that already take advantage of Lightower technology, including high tech, education, health care, financial services and other enterprises.

Philadelphia is part of a broader expansion effort Lightower has taken over the past five years. During this period, the service provider has expanded its footprint throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and Greater Chicago area and now operates an all-fiber network of more than 20,000 route miles, providing service to over 7,500 locations.
