Lightpath lights up 100G optical transport service

Lightpath is giving its customers that reside in the New York metro area a new speed option by offering a 100G optical transport service (OTS).

This is not just a build-it-and-they-will-come offering. The new service is already being used by an area media and entertainment company to move large volumes of video across the region.

Available throughout the entire Lightpath footprint, the 100G OTS service is offered for a flat, monthly recurring charge.

Like other service providers, Lightpath said it is seeing demand for 100G services from a number of the vertical markets it serves, including financial and market data services, media and entertainment and healthcare. All of these segments are requiring higher bandwidth to support their migrations to the cloud and the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) movement.

In particular, 100G is also becoming an attractive option for the healthcare and financial industries that have to comply with new regulatory requirements to securely store data.

Besides offering higher speeds, the OTS offering includes what it says is "premium" monitoring and support. To ensure uptime, Lightpath built the service with diverse and redundant network routing.

This new service comes at a time when Lightpath is increasing its reach into more New York metro businesses. In September, it expanded its on-net fiber presence to 6,000 buildings, which could be a prime target for the 100G OTS product.
