Lightpath surpasses 7,000 on-net building milestone in New York metro area

Lightpath has further solidified its growing presence in the New York metro Ethernet services market by announcing that its fiber network now reaches more than 7,000 buildings and spans more than 5,800 route miles.

The past year has been a busy network buildout time for Lightpath. During that period, the service provider connected more than 1,000 new locations onto its network, up from 6,000 buildings last September.

What drove this buildout was a growing demand from its professional services customers such as business services, engineering, accounting, finance, insurance, real estate and law that need fiber-based Ethernet services to support their growing use of cloud and video conferencing services.

One customer that has seen the benefit of this build is Spectraserv, an environmental services company based in Kearney, N.J. The company needed a fiber-based connection to its site so it could support new cloud-based software and deploy a VPN to support its mobile teams.

"As our business grew and changed over the years, we found ourselves in need of a fiber-based telecommunications service that could support our high-bandwidth needs, but there were absolutely no options in our area," said James Miele, owner of Spectraserv, in a release. "We talked to Lightpath about what we needed and they invested in building fiber all the way to our building."

By broadening its on-net fiber reach, the service provider also will be able to potentially upsell new and existing customers its 100G optical transport service (OTS).

Although cable operators trail the larger incumbents, it is the fastest growing segment of the Ethernet and fiber-based service market segments.

According to a recent Vertical Systems Group report, the six leading cable MSOs in the U.S. carrier Ethernet services market are Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), Cox, Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Charter Business (Nasdaq: CHTR), Cablevision's (NYSE: CVC) Lightpath and Bright House Networks.
