LTE could bridge Verizon wireline, wireless

You may have heard Verizon Wireless decided the next stop in its wireless network technology roadmap will be the Long-Term Evolution standard. That was big news in the wireless sector, as the CDMA giant had yet to announce its 4G plans. However, LTE won't only figure in the plans of Verizon Wireless, the company controlled by Verizon Communications, but also 45%-owned by Vodafone; the technology choice also will great implications for the wireline parent firm, according to a story in Telephony.

Verizon Wireless CTO Dick Lynch described choosing LTE a "big picture" decision by Verizon proper, with an eye to integration of LTE with Verizon's FiOS wireline broadband network. Seamless broadband application integration sounds exciting, though it may not happen for a while. Verizon Wireless will start LTE trials next year, but the "big picture" could take several years to paint.
