Lumos Networks adds mobile capabilities to its IP Centrex line
Lumos Networks (Nasdaq: LMOS), a regional ILEC that's been gaining continual traction with business customers in Virginia and surrounding states, on Wednesday revealed its IP Centrex product suite with the addition of its Business Communicator product to appeal to the mobile employee.
Once the product is installed on a user's desktop and/or smartphone, they can see a fellow employee's status while they are away from their desk or use the instant messaging application to call out using their desk phone number identity.
Among the features included in the new Business Communicator are: instant messaging and presence, desktop video chat, call logs and message history, desktop control of traditional telephony features and a soft phone client application that enables users to make calls when they are connected only to the Internet.
Users will be able to access the mobile applications on the Google Play store and, at a future date, on the Apple app store. Although the user has to order the mobile application before using the applications, they are compatible with any wireless service.
The new service leverages BroadSoft's BroadTouch Business Communicator and BroadCloud Unified Communications services.
Leveraging its growing multi-state fiber network, Lumos has been expanding its suite of IP-based voice and data products such as Ethernet throughout the past year. On the voice side, the telco has been aggressively marketing its SIP Trunking service. In November, Lumos was selected by Avaya to be a Technology Partner in the Avaya DevConnect program and announced that its SIP Trunking solution is compliant with Avaya IP Office.
These initiatives reflect the growing trend of wireline-centric Tier 2 telcos like Lumos looking for ways to transform themselves from just local voice-centric telcos to ones that sell IP-based business and consumer services. These new mobile and IP premises services will strengthen their bond with existing and new business customers who are growing their distributed and mobile workforce.
While Lumos has not announced the date of its Q4 2012 earnings release, its enterprise data, carrier data and IP services grew 5 percent during Q3 2012.
