Lumos' Pittsburgh NOC aims to improve fiber-to-the-cell traffic

Lumos Networks fired up a Pittsburgh-based parallel Network Operating Center (NOC) that will concurrently replicate the functions of the company's NOC in Waynesboro, Va., and connect with the company's Project Ark all-IP network overlay designed to handle fiber-to-the-cell traffic.

A Lumos press release said that the NOC, located in a recently opened Pittsburgh office, will replicate the Waynesboro facility's full performance surveillance, repair, upgrade and maintenance of about 7,500 route miles of dense fiber and provide full redundancy of the company's business continuity and disaster recovery functions.

The new NOC will "provide significant geographic diversity" and is part of a "transformational move by Lumos as we continue our evolution to a fiber bandwidth company," Lumos CTO Craig Drinkhall said in the press release.

It will also provide a "major selling point to our key carrier and enterprise customers," added CEO Timothy Blitz. "There are few, if any regional fiber bandwidth providers who can boast two parallel NOCs managing their fiber networks. We consider this to be a key differentiating factor for Lumos going forward."

In addition to the NOC, the new Pittsburgh office will house an R&D center to test advanced fiber data products and a sales office.
