Lyatiss moves SDN toward application-defined networking

Software-defined networking was all the rage in 2012, and is likely to continue as a top story in 2013, but some companies are already trying to put a new spin on SDN by focusing more on application-specific networking needs. The latest firm to do so is Lyatiss, a start-up with offices in Santa Clara, Calif., and Lyon, France, that is making its public debut today.

It is tempting to call Lyatiss an SDN company, but its software-as-a-service solution CloudWeaver focuses more on what the company calls application-defined networking, or tacking how a specific application flow moves through a series of virtual machines.

Moving beyond general data flow monitoring and focusing on monitoring application specifics could help application developers and providers spot performance and usage trends early on that otherwise could result in outages or poor performance. In doing that, Lyatiss is providing a clue as to how the next phase of the SDN sector could develop, with network hardware potentially adjusting automatically to changing application performance.

For now, CloudWeaver is usable in conjunction with Amazon Web Services, but eventually it will be capable of being used in multi-cloud environments.
