McDonald's to offer free WiFi in 2010

McDonald's continues to find ways to build on top of its customer convenience image, the burger chain plans to offer free WiFi access in the majority of its U.S. restaurants next year.

Providing WiFi is nothing new to McDonald's. It has been providing WiFi access for about five years, but you had to pay $2.95 to get just two hours of access. McDonald's believes the addition of WiFi is a good fit for the company as it expands its coffee business to compete with the likes of Starbucks, which already offers free WiFi. Come mid-January, patrons will be able get unlimited Internet access for free through a partnership with AT&T.

"McDonald's is about value--value in our food, value in our services," said Dave Grooms, chief information officer for McDonald's USA. "It's a natural fit."
