MEF eyes Ethernet peering point

Light Reading, reporting from its Ethernet Expo in New York, says the Metro Ethernet Forum is considering creating a third-party Ethernet peering point for carrier Ethernet hand-offs. The Ethernet exchange would be not unlike a VoIP peering point. That kind of exchange, coming at a time when virtually all carriers have broad Ethernet expansions in mind, could help them expand more cost-efficiently by using one another's existing network coverage. The concept also could more easily establish standard network-to-network interfaces for Ethernet services founded on different specifications.

The report quoted unnamed sources, and the MEF declined comment, so it is not yet clear how such a peering point would be developed, or who would operate it.
