Motorola to split into two

Motorola's on-again and off-again plans about how it will divvy up its properties--details about which began to emerge last November--were put to rest yesterday when the company announced that it will break itself up into two independent, publicly traded companies.

Set to be completed in Q1, the new split effectively quells any rumors that Chinese rival Huawei could get a piece of the business as speculated in various industry reports.

Under the new two-tier structure, Motorola's Mobile devices and Home business will continue to offer set top boxes and mobile devices, while the Enterprise Mobility Solutions and Networks will continue to sell wireless networking gear. Previously, Motorola thought of separating its mobile unit from the rest of the company.

Dr. Sanjay Jha, co-chief executive officer of Motorola, Inc., will become CEO of Motorola's Mobile Devices and Home businesses, while his colleague Greg Brown will become CEO of the Mobility Solutions and Networks unit.
