MTS establishes managed provider position with planned Manitoba data center

MTS has hatched a plan to build a multi-tenant data center to provide a suite of colocation, managed hosting and cloud services to Manitoba-based business service providers.

Set to open in 2015, the data center will be about 70,000 feet and built to meet the Uptime Institute's Tier III certification.

MTS said that it would leverage "Manitoba's cooler climate, lower real estate costs, and supply of clean, economical power to offer customers a cost-effective data storage solution."

This data center build is part of a broader effort the Canadian telco is taking to expand its presence in the IT space.

Earlier this year, it acquired Winnipeg-based EPIC Information Solutions, which gave new IT capabilities and access into an existing customer base of 700 businesses across Manitoba and Saskatchewan. It will be able to apply that service provider's experience in operating the new center.

MTS said that the $47 million project "is not expected to change the company's 2014 outlook previously announced on Nov. 7, 2013."
