Neutral Tandem turns on new Ethernet exchanges

Neutral Tandem (Nasdaq: TNDM) is so confident about its Ethernet exchange capabilities that the service provider has lit up eight new Ethernet exchange Points of Presence (PoPs), upping its presence to 14 markets.

After initially launching its six Ethernet exchanges in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and New York, it has now completed the buildout of eight additional markets including Denver, Detroit, Houston, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

Claiming to have the largest Ethernet exchange presence in the U.S., the opening of the new markets will enable service providers to purchase Ethernet services from a neutral party to expand their respective reach.

But Neutral Tandem's ambitions extend far beyond the U.S. borders. With its acquisition of Italian wholesaler Tinet now in the can, Neutral Tandem adds 15 established External Network to Network Interconnection (E-NNI) arrangements in tough to reach areas in both Asia Pacific and Europe. Having strong international and domestic Ethernet interconnection presence will resonate well with both service providers that are trying sating the appetite of their multi-site business customers.

While Neutral Tandem's moves illustrate its aggressiveness to enter the Ethernet exchange space, it will need to continue to attract large tier 1 customers beyond the initial charter customers it revealed earlier this year.
