NIST incorporates PacketCable spec for Smart Grid

Tools

While most of the service provider attention around Smart Grids has centered on wireless and wireline telcos, the cable industry is just as keen on cashing in on the opportunity. Among the nearly 80 standards that could be used for Smart Grid deployments, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) draft report on Smart Grid technology cites CableLab's Packet Cable specifications for home security, energy management and home automation (SMA) as a good fit for future Smart Grid deployments.

NIST included CableLabs' SMA specification in its Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards Release 1.0 as one of 31 standards that it found had "strong stakeholder consensus." Other standards that NIST would like to leverage include Zigbee, HomePlug, GPS and the IEEE 802.11 (WiFi) and 802.16 (WiMAX) standards families.
