Nokia Siemens Networks takes hybrid road to wireless backhaul

Nokia Siemens Networks is using this week's Carrier Ethernet World Congress (CEWC) in Berlin to unveil a wireless backhaul solution set that marries Carrier Ethernet Transport (CET) with microwave radio technology. By combining the two technologies into one solution, NSN says it can eliminate the need for a separate indoor unit to house the microwave radio. NSN's hybrid backhaul solution has been incorporated fully in the interoperability test bed of the European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC).

Unlike traditional wireless backhaul approaches that require additional aggregation devices and other cabinets at the base station sites, NSN has incorporated a Carrier Ethernet engine in its FlexiPacket Microwave Radio solution. NSN says that the CET feature set enables network and transport sharing with strict QoS guarantees and support for next-gen mobile services and applications. During the EANTC interoperability demonstration, NSN will show its FlexiWCDMA BTS, FlexiPacket Microwave and Symmetricom's Time Provider 5000 IEEE1588-2008 master clock connected to a multivendor Carrier Ethernet Network.
