Nortel cuts employees from its Texas roster

Tools

Nortel will be handing out pink slips to 56 of its Richardson, Texas-based employees. The layoffs, which are effective on around January 3, 2010 make up about 2 percent of the beleaguered company's Dallas-Forth Worth, Texas 2,500 employee base.

Calling the layoffs "permanent," the current headcount reduction is related to the sale of its enterprise voice business to New Jersey-based Avaya as part of the Nortel's ongoing asset sale. An Avaya spokesman said that it will continue to employ 70 percent of the workers that were part of the original Nortel division, but it could not retain 100 percent of the unit's employees.
