NTT DoCoMo paves all-IP path

Tools

Claiming to be one of the first operators to make the switch to LTE, Japan's NTT DoCoMo is putting some juice into its IP core network by deploying Alcatel-Lucent's 7450 Ethernet Service Switch (ESS). The mobile operator will leverage the ESS to transform its network to all-IP, enabling it to deliver of course voice, but also high speed data and video services.

Along with addressing the need to accommodate latency-sensitive services such as voice and video traffic, the new network deployment will help NTT pave a path to upgrade its network to 10 Gbps and, as demands dictate, to 40 Gbps and ultimately 100 Gbps.

As the competition heats up for 40 and 100 Gbps platforms, NTT DoCoMo is yet another proof point for Alcatel-Lucent's router portfolio that it can cite against rivals Cisco and Juniper. In addition to NTT DoCoMo, Alcatel-Lucent has racked up new deals with NTT proper, Cox Business and Qwest, which is leveraging the Alcatel-Lucent's 100 Gbps service interface for its 7750 Edge Service Router to deploy 100 Gbps business services.

It is unlikely that Lucent can get to the named recognition that either Juniper or Cisco Has today. I would be skeptical and who has experience with these devices.. Only a few specialized people.
