NTT's Pacific Crossing completes repair on PC-1 submarine cable

Pacific Crossing, a subsidiary of NTT Communications (NYSE: NTT) that operates the transpacific PC-1 submarine cable system, has finished work on fixing damage on the PC-1 North route that links Ajigaura, Japan with Harbour Pointe, Wash.

Both the north and west routes of PC-1 suffered damage during the Tohoku earthquake in March. With repairs on the north route completed, Pacific Crossing expects the west route will be operational again in late June.  

While the earthquake was a setback, the addition of new wavelengths on the PC-1 system, which raises cable capacity to 1.8 Tbps, will enable Pacific Crossing to respond to what it says is an exponential bandwidth demand and the low latency routes it offers on the PC-1 system.

Takahiro Sumimoto, chief executive officer of Pacific Crossing, said in a statement that service on the PC-1 system has been restored but also that they "increased capacity to support further traffic growth, especially for financial industry customers who deploy time sensitive applications on our cable systems."
