NXTcomm: Verizon set to announce FiOS speed boost

Tools

Verizon Communications President and COO Denny Strigl had not yet taken the stage at NXTcomm for his Wednesday morning key note as of this writing, but the Associated Press and Cnet already were reporting Strigl planned to announce that Verizon will boost its speed for mid-tier FiOS services from 15Mbps/2Mbps to 20Mbps/5Mbps. The carrier's low-tier service is moving from 5Mbps/2Mbps to 10Mbps/2Mbps

Also, he was reportedly scheduled to announce that a plan offering 50 megabits per second and uploads of 20 Mbps for about $140 a month will begin to expand from a handful of East Coast markets to all of the company's FiOS markets. In addition, the same will happen with Verizon's previously announced symmetrical 20 Mbps download/20 Mbps upload service.

Strigl also reportedly planned to mention Verizon's trial capabilities for 100 Mbps service through FiOS to customer homes.

This is exactly what I have been saying for a some time. The bigger or better Verizon gets - the more it hurts the consumer in the pocketbook. We know at least three people at the FCC favor companies getting bigger and bigger. We need to put the breaks on this company and the behemoth AT&T or the consumer will be sorry for years to come. Verizon increasing the speed equals more money in their coffers. What they offer now is sufficient. No one in the industry has said that they need to do this. The FCC should deny the Alltel merger. I don't believe this is good for consumers. This is exactly why Sprint needs to invigorate its company and products. We definitely need an alternative to these high priced conglomerates!!!
