Optical component firms Finisar, Optium to merge

Finisar and Optium, both optical components firms that have toiled in the shadow of sector giant JDS Uniphase, are pursuing an all-stock merger worth $244 million. The resulting company will be called Finisar, and sector observers are wondering if it could inspire more consolidation in a market that has sorely needed it during an extended period of price gouging. Bulking up also will help Finisar to better make its case as a primary components vendor if major equipment makers begin to thin their ranks of component suppliers.
