Optimum Lightpath lights up school district with optical Ethernet

Tools

New Jersey-based Howell Township School District's drive for a better telecom experience is a similar story heard all too many times: it's paying for an expensive yet slow T1 service for its communications needs.

By switching to Optimum Lightpath's Ethernet Ethernet-based private fiber network, the district instantly upped its speeds from 6 Mbps--a bandwidth allocation that was being strained by 12 schools--to 50 Mbps. With this new bandwidth in hand, all of the 12 schools in its district could gain access to a set of new digital education applications.

"Optimum Lightpath has given us a great solution, and economically it's been a great decision," said Tom Aquino, Howell Township School District's director of information technology in a release. "Now we are exploring all kinds of things we could not do before: using teleconferencing, conducting video conferencing with NASA and the national archives, deploying Smart Boards, using WebEx to increase efficiencies, and using podcasts for teaching and research."
