Orange lights up LION undersea optical network

Orange is riding the ongoing submarine fiber cable renaissance as the service provider has turned up the LION (Lower Indian Ocean Network) cable in Reunion, France. Connecting Madagascar, Reunion and Mauritius, the 1,000 km LION network was lit on Reunion in mid-November. Jointly financed by France Telecom, Orange, Madagascar and Mauritius Telecom, the WDM-based cable will offer 1.28 Tbps of speed to potential customers.

The LION network connects Madagascar to the broadband Internet network and secures the connection of France Telecom's regional sites with two sites in Reunion and Mauritius Island. Reunion and Mauritius serve as connection points for the SAT3-WASC-SAFE cable and provide a link between Europe and Asia via the southern tip of Africa. And because of a project that will bring the LION cable to Mombasa, Kenya, it could be interconnected with other area submarine network cables.
