PAETEC opens new Phoenix-based data center

PAETEC (Nasdaq: PAET) is responding to the rapidly growing data center market by opening a new data center facility in Phoenix, Ariz.

Offering Southwest-based business colocation services with services that can scale up 1 Gbps, the 4,400 square foot data center is supported by a 24X7 Technical Assistance Center and backed by a 1.4-megawatt backup generator, UPS scalable to 800kva, and an FM-200 fire suppression system.

So what's driving PAETEC's latest data center move? Already engaged in an ongoing aggressive data center build out strategy throughout its nationwide footprint, PAETEC's continual bet on the data center market throughout 2010 and into 2011 reflects Infonetics Research's report that data center network equipment (Ethernet switch, application delivery controllers (ADCs), and WAN optimization appliances) grew 67 percent in 2010.

But the new data center is not simply just about network expansion alone. Arunas Chesonis, chairman and CEO, PAETEC, said that "This new data center fits our strategy of enabling cloud-based technologies and business continuity options for our customers to safeguard information, decrease management needs, and reduce network latency."

Of course, PAETEC is moving into an increasingly competitive data center market. The service provider will have to contend with a set of powerful competitors in data center provider Phoenix NAP data center provider, which continues to attract a number of service provider partners including Cox Business, Global Crossing (Nasdaq: GLBC), Level 3 (Nasdaq: LVLT), and tw telecom (Nasdaq: TWTC).
