Palo Alto looks for a new fiber buddy

The city council of Palo Alto, Calif., has voted to continue working on a plan for a municipal fiber broadband network and to continue looking for a network operator partner, even though the city's original network consortium partner withdrew from the project. Palo Alto aspires to build a network capable of providing 100 Mbps access. The project could cost between $45 million and $60 million.

Similar municipal projects have not faired well in the long run. For example, the iProvo network in Provo, Utah, stumbled and was sold to Broadweave Networks, and the Utopia network, also in Utah, also had problems landing customers and faced stiffer-than-expected competition from traditional telecom carriers.
