The IEEE at a meeting in Tokyo has approved the Provider Backbone Bridging - Traffic Engineering standard, based on provider backbone transport technology. PBT has had its ups and downs over the last couple of years, but the standard's ratification as PBB-TE should give the connection-oriented Ethernet technology a boost against Layer 3-based solution multi-protocol layer switch-transport profile (MPLS-TP). That technology is being standardized by the International Telecommunications Union.
