Phorm: BT trial done, deployment next

Phorm, the U.K.-based deep packet inspection vendor that has been engaged with BT in a controversial trial involving Internet usage data collection for the purposes of targeted advertising, has an update. The company issued a statement saying that the trial was completed late week and that, "Following the successful completion of analysis, both of the trial results and of any changes required for expansion, BT has informed the company that it expects to move toward deployment."

Phorm has been hit by much of the same criticism as was leveled at U.S. DPI firm NebuAd, but unlike NebuAd, has thus far survived with its original strategy firmly in place. The statement seems to be an endorsement that will buoy Phorm for the time being, but it doesn't appear that BT is saying anything more specific about its plans for the Phorm technology, or for targeted advertising in general.
