Plastic optical fiber shows potential as inexpensive home networking option

As consumers' appetite for over-the-top video and music streaming continues to expand, broadband providers see plastic optical fiber (POF) as a potential short-range option in the home network.

One of the positive aspects of POF is that it's a low-cost option that be purchased at home improvement stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot.

However, POF does have some inherent limitations. Unlike traditional silica-based fiber, POF has high signal loss compared to conventional optical fiber so it would work best over short distances. Take a look at FierceInstaller's report.
