Qwest wants to raise Colorado residential rates

Qwest Communications is looking for more flexibility to increase residential telephone pricing in Colorado, along with the pledge that it will invest some of the revenue it gains to provide broadband access capabilities to underserved areas in the state. At least one state senator supports the proposal and is set to introduce legislation to back it, but a public utilities commission official already has criticized the proposal. Qwest says the current monthly rate of $14.88 is kept artificially low by regulation, but the PUC official is concerned that Qwest could use new rate flexibility to raise monthly charges as high as $19.61.
