Qwest/Sprint wireless partnership on skids

Tools

Qwest Communications held its first analyst day event since December 2001, but the company did not unleash six-plus years of stocked-up news on the industry. Actually, there were no real surprises, but there were some significant statements by Qwest CEO Ed Mueller about the company's lack of satisfaction with its current wireless MVNO partnership with Sprint Nextel. Specifically, Mueller said, "I don't think a better MVNO agreement gets us to where we want to go. We need a new partner. We bring a lot to the party, and people will see that."

So, it sounds like Sprint will be out at some point, and someone new will be in, but it remains to be seen who the new partner could be, or if it will even be a traditional mobile carrier. Could it be a new 700 Mhz player, or a WiMAX firm?
