RCN Business achieves MEF CE 2.0 certification for Ethernet service suite

RCN Business, a competitive business service provider, added another potential element of differentiation by gaining the Metro Ethernet Forum's Carrier Ethernet 2.0 (CE 2.0) certification.

The service provider has gained CE 2.0 certification for its E-Line, E-LAN and E-Access services.

Since CE 2.0 was launched last year, only a total of nine service providers, including now RCN Business, have gained CE 2.0 certification. Other service providers that have gained CE 2.0 certification include Alaska Communications Services, Comcast Business (NASDAQ: CMCSA), Lumos Networks and tw telecom.

While a number of larger carriers like Verizon are working on their certification process, Robert Roeder, executive vice president and chief development officer for RCN Business, said that many are not "expected to finalize and achieve certification until 2015."

Gaining CE 2.0 certification does give RCN Business, which serves five markets in the Northeast and one in the Midwest, a near-term differentiator as it looks to win over more small to medium businesses (SMBs) and regional medium-sized businesses that are looking for alternative providers.

Like other business units of cable operators, RCN Business has been finding that its services are catching fire in multi-site regional segments including hospitality, real estate and higher education as seen with its contract with Pace University.
