RCN Metro: This Ethernet connection goes to 10 Gbps

RCN Metro has upgraded the access layer of its Ethernet network to include 10 Gbps Metro Ethernet-based transport in several key network locations. The upgrades, which RCN Metro said were done to sate rising customer bandwidth demands, will not only provide greater scalability but also allow users to increase bandwidth levels as needed just days--instead of the weeks required on DWDM and SONET systems.

By making an upgrade to 10 Gbps Ethernet at the access layer, RCN Metro said it eliminated unnecessary propagation, resulting in reduced CPU cycles to transfer data from the access layer to the existing 10 Gbps distribution and core layers. The end result is enhanced network performance, increased data transport speeds and decreased network latency. To date, RCN Metro has upgraded six locations from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps, and plans to upgrade other locations in its network footprint by the end of 2009.
