Report: U.S. telcos mull $400 million investment in Honduras' Hondutel

Honduras' dominant telco Hondutel may be getting a helping hand from a number of unnamed U.S.-based telecom companies, reports TeleGeography.

Citing an unconfirmed report from Honduran news journal Radio America, these U.S. companies would like to invest up to $400 million in Hondutel.

Among the various proposals presented to Hondutel to help it regain its financial footing including the management of wireless, Internet access, fiber cabling and power systems. Any investor would then be compensated through ‘revenue sharing and through Hondutel services given to those companies.'

But even if these rumors are true, investors would need to get joint approval from Honduras' president Porfirio Lobo Sosa, and from the country's Congress.
