Rumor mill: Vodafone to strike deal for TalkTalk

Could UK's TalkTalk become part of Vodafone's (LSE:  VOD.L) empire? Well, a rumor has emerged that Vodafone wants to purchase the UK broadband service provider.

According to Telecompaper report citing the Daily Mail's Market Watch column, HSBC's corporate finance team are apparently crafting a GBP 1.8 billion ($2.9 billion) deal to acquire TalkTalk. No other details about potential deal between the two service providers are available at this time.

TalkTalk, which was separated out as a separate holding company under Carphone Warehouse early this year, has been aggressively expanding its broadband footprint.

In October, TalkTalk became one of the first named customers to leverage BT's (NYSE: BT) Fiber to the Cabinet (FTTC) network to offer up to 40 Mbps broadband service.
