San Diego buys Nokia's IP/MPLS and packet microwave technology as vendor expands beyond traditional telcos

The city of San Diego said it purchased Nokia's (NYSE:NOK) Internet Protocol/Multi-protocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) and packet microwave radio technology to backhaul the P25 digital trunked radio system for its public-safety communications.

"Municipal communications networks, particularly in large cities like San Diego, are facing enormous demands as more bandwidth-intensive applications such as video are utilized for public safety and other municipal services," said Kamal Ballout, head of sales for the Global Enterprise and Public Sector for Nokia's U.S. business. "Nokia has the premier end-to-end public safety networking solution to address mission-critical requirements."

Nokia noted the sale reflects its efforts to expand its options beyond traditional telecom companies. Release
