SaskTel extends Internet service to four new rural communities

SaskTel is continuing on its mission to bring basic DSL to the rural markets it serves by delivering the service to the areas of Bruno, Annaheim, Elbow and Middle Lake.

Area residents in these communities will be able to get access to the service provider's High Speed Basic Level 2 package that offers speeds of up to 5 Mbps.

Expansion into these communities is part of the telco's longer-term strategy in rural Saskatchewan that it introduced during the 2013 Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities annual conference.

Under the seven-year, $55.4 million program, SaskTel will install new fiber and associated equipment to stay apace of growth of both its wireline- and wireless-based voice, video and data service.

In addition to expanding DSL of up to 5 Mbps to 50 additional communities, part of its rural strategy includes upgrading speeds to 10 Mbps in more than 220 existing DSL communities.

Broadband expansion overall has become a major initiative for SaskTel. The service provider is deploying Fiber to the Premises (FTTP)-based services in its urban areas as part of a broader $800 million FTTP program. Eligible customers will be able to get speeds of up to 100/20 Mbps and 260/60 Mbps.
