Savvis incorporates Trend Micro's Intrusion Prevention into its cloud service portfolio

Savvis, CenturyLink's (NYSE: CTL) cloud and colocation subsidiary, on Tuesday added Trend Micro Deep Security to its Symphony Virtual Private Data Center (VPDC) cloud service set.

By incorporating Virtual IPS (vIPS) for VPDC into its cloud services portfolio, it will be able to offer customers what it says is a fully automated intrusion prevention system that can accommodate either hybrid (public/private) or public cloud environments.

Existing Symphony VPDC customers will be able to access virtual self-tuning intrusion prevention and inline patching capabilities.

As an added layer of support, Savvis plans to increase its security operations center support with 24/7 support for vIPS.

The relationship with Trend Micro is just one of several initiatives Savvis has taken recently, including its recent acquisition of parts of Ciber's (NYSE: CBR) global IT Outsourcing (ITO) business and an expansion of its domestic and international data centers.

Whether it's developed in-house or through a partner like Trend Micro, Dennis Brouwer, General Manager, Converged Cloud and Global Network Solutions for Savvis, said in a recent interview with FierceTelecom that it is focusing a lot of its effort to move further up into the enterprise and business customer's application stack.

"We think that that integrated global infrastructure will allow us to move higher up the stack if you will and add more Software as a Service (SaaS)-type applications," he said. "Some of those we'll own and some of them we'll partner for, and some will be companies that will use our infrastructure to deliver application services to their customers."

CenturyLink's move into the cloud and colocation market continues to bring positive returns for the telco.

In Q2 2012, the service provider reported that Enterprise Markets Group (EMG) - Data Hosting Services division, which consists mainly of Savvis' operations, saw operating revenues rise 6.5 percent to $277 million due to strong managed hosting (including cloud) and colocation services sales.
