Sorrento Networks gains access edge with RBN buy

Sorrento Networks, a metro optical vendor which was acquired by Zhone Technologies in 2004, but sold back to its former owners in recent months, is acquiring Redfern Broadband Networks. Sorrento gains access gear to match its metro strengths. Also, buying the Australian vendor ironically may help Sorrento reach more independent telcos in the U.S. who had previously bought RBN's optical access gear. As relationships with smaller telcos become more important for vendors selling to a consolidated industry, it is hard to believe that an optical access vendor with a record of indie telco deployments had been overlooked until now. Will this acquisition help fuel the unlikely re-emergence of Sorrento?
