Sovernet brings redundancy to Vermont State Colleges' network

Sovernet Communications, a Vermont-based middle mile provider, has been tasked to provide the Vermont State Colleges (VSC) with an upgrade to its redundant ISP connection at its Community College of Vermont (CCV) facility in Winooski.

Although they did not reveal financial terms of the two-year agreement, Sovernet will provide primary Internet connectivity for CCV Winooski and backup Internet connectivity for all of the VSC system.

CCV Winooski is part of a larger set of over 25 locations in the VSC college system.

Sovernet has already established itself as a trusted provider to VSC, having won a deal last March to provide the college system with WAN services to 15 sites throughout Vermont, including Lyndon State, Castleton State and Vermont Technical College campuses, and various CCV academic centers.

By moving to Sovernet's fiber network, VSC said it saw a "nearly ten-fold increase in connectivity speeds" for all of its regionally dispersed locations, while improving network uptime.

Besides VSC, the service provider also is providing WAN service to Vermont's Department of Information and Innovation (DII), connecting 77 locations throughout the state.

What also makes Sovernet an attractive alternative provider to Vermont government, education and businesses is the fact that the service provider has reach into the Albany, N.Y., region via its subsidiary Independent Optical Networks (ION), which completed its $50 million middle mile network project last January.

The combined company now has a total of 4,500 miles of fiber network in northern New England and New York. It also offers a transport option from Boston to its existing network in in New Hampshire, Vermont and New York.
