Spain allocates $322M to equip schools with 100 Mbps connections

Spain's ministry of industry is taking a radical approach to solve the connectivity problem for its country's education system by dedicating $332 million to equip all of the country's schools with broadband speeds of up to 100 Mbps.

The country's industry minister Jose Manuel Soria, education minister Jose Ignacio Wert and economy minister Luis de Guindos signed the corresponding framework agreement in the presence of President Mariano Rajoy.

Rajoy said that the project, which is part of Spain's Digital Agenda objectives, will put high speed connections into the hands of 6.5 million students in over 16,500 state-funded schools.

Set on serving schools located in rural areas, Spain's ICT development agency Red.es will manage the initiative that's being partly funded by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Besides the 100 Mbps connections, schools will be able to connect to RedIRIS, Spain's national research and education network.
