SPOTLIGHT: MagicJack voice-via-USB gains steam

Tools

Last fall, a couple of new players on the VoIP scene, Ooma and Magic Jack, emerged at around the same time to challenge our notions of how voice will be delivered in the future and how much it will cost. Ooma offered a voice hub with an expensive upfront cost in exchange for free voice calling, while MagicJack put out a super-cheap $19.95 USB VoIP device promising super-cheap voice calling.

Recently, Ooma reportedly has been retooling its approach, but Telephony reports that MagicJack is jamming, having launched with a sign-up rate of about 50 customers per day. Meanwhile, MagicJack is continuing to improve customer service after some initial glitches. Check out this coverage at Telephony
