SPOTLIGHT: Qwest faces opposition in Arizona over forbearance request
Qwest, actively been seeking to slip out from under certain tenants of the 1996 Telecommunications Act with a series of forbearance petitions, has run into a windstorm--albeit, a tiny one, of opposition in Arizona.
The state's Commerce Department head, Jan Lesher, contacted the FCC claiming Qwest's release would "harm Arizona consumers, and is not consistent with the public interest." She's the third member of Arizona's government to opposed Qwest's petition, joining state Rep. Bill Konopnicki and the state's Corporation Commission, which regulates telecom rates. If they keep opposing this, soon the cable and internet companies will become the monopoly, so why are not the internet companies and the cable companies under the same thing. A phone company can now be an internet company or a cable company. They are getting away with it and think nothing of the phone companies getting in the way because they are under an old law, that legislators cannot understand. Qwest has an issue that people are turning a deaf ear to. Look at what Google, Sprint, etc are trying to do. The internet and cable companies are creating a monopoly right under everyones nose!
