Sprint, Clearwire cancel WiMAX pairing

Tools

Sprint and Clearwire have ended a partnership they cultivated just a few months ago under which they intended to join their WiMAX efforts in a national roaming infrastructure. As Sprint looks for a new CEO, it appears to be re-thinking its WiMAX and Pivot cable TV strategies.

The end of the Sprint-Clearwire partnership is potentially damaging to the WiMAX ecosystem, though it may not affect whether or not wireline telcos choose to use WiMAX technology to some extent. It does, however, clear the competitive path a bit, as a national broadband wireless partnership would have been a formidable foe for telcos.
