Sprint Wholesale to trim workforce

Things aren't looking so good for Sprint Wholesale these days as the service provider announced yesterday that it will cut more than a dozen jobs from that division. Even though Sprint did report some gains in sales of its turnkey voice services to cable operators (currently serving 4.9 million customers) in the third quarter, it was not enough to stop the bleeding. This week Sprint's cable company customers Comcast and Time Warner Cable, which both offer aggressive triple play voice, video and data packages, will release their Q3 09 financial results.

Although Sprint would not reveal how many workers would be affected in the layoffs, they did say the cuts would not affect more than 100 employees of the wholesale division's 575 person workforce. As Sprint's traditional long-distance voice and cable telephony products continue to decline, Sprint plans to turn its attention towards new growth areas including machine-to-machine, a technology it is using to serve the utility industry in emerging smart grid projects.
